WRITING WOMEN BACK INTO HISTORY

LIZETTE GASCON, TRAINING COORDINATOR

F. Gaviña and Sons, Inc., a successful familyowned and operated coffee roasting business for more than 100 years, has not once looked back with regret. However, it was not until recently that the sons of the founder, the late Don Francisco actually felt the need to. What caused this sudden spark of interest? The discovery - here at Gaviña - of a month dedicated specifically to Women and their accomplishments.

The month of March is marked historically as Women’s History Month in the United States and Don Francisco’s sons have made it their mission to honor two of the important Women in their lives: their late mother, Anatolia Etcheverry-Gaviña and their sister Leonor Gaviña-Valls. This recognition opens up the Gaviña Women’s legacy and allows them to be “written back into history.” “Gaviña Gourmet Coffee promotes, trains, and mentors Women. Women in our organization are part of our culture, environment, innovation and success,” quotes Pedro Gaviña (President of the Company). Women are not a new addition to the corporate culture at Gaviña; the company originated in part because of Anatolia Etcheverry-Gaviña (Former President), and continues prospering in the competitive market in many ways thanks specifically to Leonor Gaviña–Valls (Vice President of Marketing). With her generosity and caring heart, Leonor makes it not only an effort, but an obligation to generously donate coffee as well as funds to various organizations which include local and global charities. Leonor donates regularly to Coffee Kids, Grounds for Health, Macy’s Passport Program for HIV/AIDS Awareness and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Organizations to name a few. She actively contributes to and participates in more than 80 charitable projects throughout California every year. In addition to donating coffee gift baskets for raffles and silent auctions, she has also implemented a donation program where Gaviña serves its delicious coffee at several charity events. Leonor also makes it a goal to routinely donate coffee to Los Angeles area Missions and Shelters so that they could provide their residents with fresh brewed coffee. It does not stop there though- this year on this VP’s list: converting Gaviña into a LEED Certified Company in a continuous effort to become eco-friendly.
