SUSTAINABLE COFFEE
YOLANDA SANCHEZ, SALES AND MARKETING SUPPORT MGR
Sustainable Coffee: There is no clear definition
of a sustainable farm or sustainable farming,
and definitions that have been proposed
are never agreed upon by those individuals
who wish to make “sustainability” a term used
to market coffee. The definition of coffee
sustainability, however, is logical. Sustainable
coffee is coffee grown in a manner that is kind
to the environment and its people. A sustainable
farm gives back as much to the land and
people as it receives. It seeks independence
from non-renewable resources, using renewable
resources when possible. Sustainable
farming also minimizes pollution, takes steps
to care for the environment, and cares for its
employees. Source: CoffeeSearch.org
F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. is actively involved in
the support of many programs worldwide to
help coffee farmers succeed.
Coffee Kids: Their mission is to help coffeefarming
families improve their quality of life.
To this end, their staff works with local organizations
in Latin America to create programs
in education, health awareness, micro credit,
and food security in coffee-farming communities.
These efforts allow coffee farmers to
reduce their dependence on the volatile
coffee market and confront the most pressing
community needs. We have been a proud
supporter since their inception in 1988.
June 2003 – F. Gaviña & Sons, Inc. partnered
with CISA Exportadora to fund social projects
in the coffee producing areas of Nicaragua.
We agreed that $0.05 cents per pound of coffee purchased by Gaviña form CISA Exportadora would go into an account to fund these projects. Our project objective is to develop a business relationship with focus on the sustainable development of the coffee regions of Nicaragua. We want to provide better opportunities for coffee growers and their families by improving their living standards through education. We have and will continue to help improve education by building and/or remodeling existing school facilities, by providing teaching materials and school supplies, by involving the community and by giving children the chance to study and learn. CISA continues involvement in the project by actively participating in the School Council and by working with the support of the Ministry of Education in Nicaragua.
